Britain and America have forged a landmark trade agreement that will keep no import taxes on UK medicine products entering the American market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to raise expenditure on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This move ensures that import taxes on these crucial exports will stay at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This agreement comes after earlier threats to significantly raise duties on patented drug products, with potential rates discussed up to 100%.

"This agreement between the UK strengthens the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and brings long-overdue balance to American-British drug exports," a release noted.

Trade Importance

Drugs represent one of the the United Kingdom's most significant exports to the United States, which is by far the biggest destination for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Export figures reveal that in the 12 months leading up to the third quarter, the UK sold medicines totaling over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure represented a significant portion of total UK exports in that span.

"This agreement secures jobs, boosts capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Detailed UK Commitments

The agreement involves several specific commitments from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it deems new treatments to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to raise total NHS spending on medicines from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount drug companies must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. In the past, rebates were more than 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a protracted tension between the drug companies and the ministers over drug pricing and approval rates.

These tensions were exacerbated by claims that US consumers were paying several times more for the same drugs than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several major drug company projects in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while major investments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS had to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its total funding over the last ten years.
